Welcoming With Heart: How Resident Ambassadors Transform the Move-In Experience

Category: Senior Living

Author: Laren Stenger, Resident Services Director

Moving into a senior living community is a major life transition. While there is often excitement about new opportunities and friendships, there can also be uncertainty as residents adjust to a new home and routine.

One of the most valuable resources we have during that transition is our Resident Ambassador program. Resident Ambassadors help create connections, offer encouragement, and provide the kind of peer-to-peer support that can make a new resident feel welcome from day one. Their willingness to reach out, share their experiences, and invite others into community life helps turn neighbors into friends and a community into home.

As Resident Services Director at The Henry Senior Living, I have seen firsthand the difference these resident leaders make in helping new residents feel comfortable, connected, and engaged.

Helping Residents Feel Comfortable From Day One

A successful move-in experience begins with a warm greeting and thoughtful support. At The Henry Senior Living, that welcome includes greeting the resident, offering a welcome gift, helping them get settled, and showing them around the community.

Those first moments matter. A new resident may be learning where things are, meeting new people, and adjusting to a different daily routine all at once. By taking time to introduce them to other residents, explain available activities, and show them how to participate moving forward, the team helps make the transition feel less overwhelming.

Resident Ambassadors add another layer of comfort by helping new residents become familiar with their surroundings. They may invite someone to upcoming activities, introduce them to neighbors, or walk with them through the community. These simple actions can help a new resident begin to feel at home in a place that still feels new.

Creating Connection Through Everyday Kindness

Some of the most meaningful welcomes are small, personal gestures. A welcome gift or card, a friendly introduction, or help finding a table at lunch can make a big difference during the first few days after move-in.

At The Henry Senior Living, Resident Ambassadors help create those moments of connection by making new residents feel included in everyday community life. They can introduce residents to others, help them feel more comfortable in the dining room, and encourage them to take part in activities that match their interests.

New residents may respond more quickly to other residents because they see them as peers. A new neighbor may feel more comfortable asking another resident questions about daily routines, meals, activities, or what to expect. That peer-to-peer support can feel natural, reassuring, and easy to accept.

Resident Ambassadors also help shape the overall culture of the community by keeping positivity, kindness, and inclusion at the forefront of their interactions. Their presence helps residents feel safe, comfortable, and less alone in their new home. By helping new residents learn daily routines and meet others, ambassadors play an invaluable role in creating a stronger sense of belonging.

Resident Ambassadors do far more than welcome new residents—they help build the culture of our community. Through simple acts of kindness, genuine friendships, and a willingness to include others, they create an environment where people feel seen, valued, and connected.

The move-in process may only last a few days, but the relationships formed during that time can have a lasting impact. We are grateful for the Resident Ambassadors who help make our community a place where every resident feels like they belong.
