Behind every breakfast served, every decorated brunch buffet, and every favorite recipe prepared is a team of dedicated culinary professionals who choose to make a difference every single day. While many cooks, servers, and dishwashers could work in traditional restaurants, they have chosen a different path—one where the people they serve become neighbors, friends, and even family.
In this Staff Spotlight, we’re highlighting the incredible individuals who make our dining programs special. Their stories remind us that senior living is about much more than preparing and serving meals—it’s about creating comfort, building relationships, celebrating life’s moments, and making every resident feel at home.
We asked members of our culinary teams to share why they chose senior living and what makes this work so meaningful. Here are their stories.
Growing Up Around Service
As Culinary Director at The Henry, senior living has been part of my life since childhood. My grandmother was a dietary manager, so I spent a lot of time in a senior living community when I was young. At 17, I began working there as a dietary aide.
From the beginning, I loved getting to know the residents. I enjoyed hearing their stories and learning about their lives. That connection is what made the work feel meaningful.
Over the past 29 years, residents have taught me so much. Each person has shared something different through their experiences, memories, and perspective. Residents truly are a wealth of knowledge. Sometimes, the most important thing we can do is slow down and listen.
One favorite tradition is monthly brunch. Residents love it, and it gives the dining team a fun way to be creative. Brunch brings energy, variety, and a sense of celebration to the community.
Serving With Compassion and Respect
Success in culinary in senior living takes a love for both food and people. Skill in the kitchen matters, but heart matters just as much. Team members need compassion, patience, and true respect for the residents who depend on them.
That respect shows up in everyday moments. It can be found in listening carefully, honoring preferences, and taking time to understand what a resident needs. In senior living, food is personal. It can bring comfort, dignity, and trust.
One moment that showed the impact of this work happened early in my career. A resident had vowed not to eat and had gone a long time without eating. After time, patience, and care, the resident finally began eating again.
That moment stayed with me. It showed me that food prepared with heart can make a real difference in someone’s life. A meal can be more than nourishment. It can be a turning point, a comfort, and a reminder that someone cares.
Every member of our culinary team has a unique story, but they all share one thing in common—a passion for serving others.
Whether they’re preparing a resident’s favorite comfort food, celebrating a birthday, or simply greeting someone with a smile, their work goes far beyond the kitchen. They create moments of joy, foster meaningful relationships, and help make our communities feel like home.
To every cook, server, dishwasher, and culinary leader who chooses senior living over a traditional restaurant, thank you. Your compassion, dedication, and commitment to hospitality make a lasting impact on the lives of our residents every single day.
Together, we’re not just serving meals—we’re serving memories.
